I’m beginning to realise that my favourite m/f ships involve a woman who could kill you with her sheer brute strength (yet is also a cinnamon roll) and an equally competent man who adores her to the ends of the earth
Though the jokes that “since gay pride month is over, july is now gay wrath month” are funny and all, it’s important to remember that July is ACTUALLY Disability Pride Month and ya’ll should really be focused on boosting disabled voices and issues this month! For instance, the fact that marriage equality doesn’t actually truly exist in the United States for disabled people, or the fact that disabled people are forced to live in poverty or lose their disability benefits, or the fact that 1 in 5 people with chronic pain end up sufferring from alcoholism or other addictions, or how accessibility is still a daily battle for all of us, or how there are active hate groups on places like reddit who try to “call out” those they see as “faking” their disabilities.
This July, boost disabled voices. Talk about the issues that our community faces. Call out ableism.
I miss when the internet was a decentralized weird place for nerds and not like 3 monolithic hellsites where racist uncles and shithead billionaires can broadcast their putrid brain sharts to literally everyone.
26-year-old Jamarion Robinson’s grandmother Beverly Nixon said her grandson was bipolar and schizophrenic. Still got shot 76 (!!!) times. Would a white person get the same treatment?
The witness said he saw more than a dozen patrol cars at the complex where US Marshals killed Robinson on August 5, 2016. Why were there no behavioral specialist? Surely one of them would know how to interact with a bipolar schizophrenic better than the police.
Hi, do you know if Tamil has a gender neutral pronoun? Also, is using it for literal babies, youngest children who are super loved and babied by their families, and favored nieces a universal Tamil thing, or is it a weird quirk of Vellore Tamil?
Yes, it does! “Avanga” and “Ivanga” (”that person” and “this person”)–or, as in Brahmin Tamil, “Avaa” and “Ivaa”–are gender-neutral terms. It gets a little confusing because generally these terms are often associated with either plural or connotations of respect (like the spanish “ustedes” and “usted”), but pretty much every dialect can use these as gender-neutral terms without being grammatically incorrect, and it doesn’t sound clunky in sentences either and is a very, very smooth replacement for “aval/ival” or “avan/ivan” (”that/this she,” “that/this he”).
And you’re right about using “Avanga” and “Ivanga” for babies! It’s definitely a super widespread quirk in Vellore, but other dialects frequently use it too (it’s slightly uncommon in certain parts of Chennai though). It’s like calling your baby “Mr.” or “Ms.” (though the most apt English translation would be “Mx.” because, like I said, “Avanga/Ivanga” doesn’t have gender) and it’s mainly for the cuteness factor that caught on in modern colloquial Tamil. The only exception is Brahmin Tamil; babies–and really anyone about two or three years younger than you–are called “Athu” and “Ithu” (”this” and “that”), much like objects, which I think is pretty funny. (Brahmins think it’s super cute and I STILL do it even though I REALLY, REALLY try not to in certain situations, because in certain other dialects calling people “athu” and “ithu” comes off as disrespectful.)
athu/ithu is not at all disrespectful please 😭 it’s just an informal way of saying avanga/ivanga it only becomes disrespectful if you’re using it with people much older than you or older people that are not that close with you
listen, yeah, tumblr is unhinged and full of clowns but it’s unhinged in a way that has coherence. the clownery has continuity. you could reference memes from 6 years ago and people would still get it. you could make jokes from long-dead shows and someone could still understand the weird cryptic hieroglyphic language of internet culture. there’s institutional memory here. where else am i gonna get that? twitter? twitter is just 5-minute rage cycles and blue check marks with brainrot and too much hubris
